Israel has sent its fighter jets to attack Hamas buildings in the Gaza Strip. Hamas is the political party currently in power in Gaza, and has refused to stop rocket attacks from Gaza on targets in Israel. Hamas says that Israel broke its promises to allow Gazans to import necessary things from other countries, and that the rocket attacks are their response to that. Hamas says that there are shortages of many things in Gaza, like medicine and fuel.
Many people have died in the Israeli attacks on Gaza, although Israel says it only wants to kill Hamas members and has tried to avoid killing innocent people near Hamas buildings. People have also died in Israel from Hamas rockets, but not as many as in Gaza. Israel says it will continue the attacks until it has removed Hamas from Gaza. Israel has also put many soldiers near the border with Gaza but it is not clear if they will invade Gaza. Hamas has promised that it will take revenge on Israel by sending suicide bombers to kill Israelis in Israel.
Many people are hoping that Barack Obama will be able to help Israel and Palestine find a peace deal when he comes to power later this month.
