The mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, has said that the pilot of an aeroplane which landed in the Hudson River is a hero. The pilot, Chesney Sullenberger, was flying the United Airways aeroplane when it hit some birds about 2 minutes after it took off from New York's La Guardia airport
The birds damaged the engines on the aeroplane and Capt Sullenberger asked for permission to return to the airport. He was told to go to Teterboro airport nearby, but the aeroplane was too far from Teterboro, so he decided to land in the Hudson River.
The temperature in New York was -7C, and the water in the river was moving very quickly, but luckily, all of the 155 passengers and crew survived. Rescuers arrived in boats to take the passengers to safety, while Capt Sullenberger checked his aeroplane to see if anyone was trapped inside.
