Costa Rica The Costa Rican government is trying to rescue people who were hurt by the most powerful earthquake in the country for 150 years. It is difficult for the rescuers because the earthquake was in a remote region of central Costa Rica, where there aren't many roads. The rescuers want to find survivors and take away the bodies of people killed by the earthquake. Costa Rica doesn't have an army, so the government has paid people who have helicopters to let the rescuers use them.

The earthquake happened around 35 kilometres (22 miles) north-west of the Costa Rican capital San Jose. The government says that 19 people have already been confirmed dead and at least 40 people are still missing.

Some people who live in San Jose had power cuts and there was some damage to roads, but there were no deaths. The Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias, said that the earthquake damaged the homes of hundreds of people, and that the deaths of people killed by the earthquake filled the country with pain.
